Last day for voter registration today

The extended window period provided by the Election Commission for voter registration is ending on Friday.

The EC started carrying out the voters registration (that had ended on July 16) after extending the window period for a week from August 17.

However, the high-level political committee (HLPC) had on Tuesday decided to ask the Election Commission to extend the window period for voter registration by one more week.

But saying that opening the process again for voters who had missed the extended deadline would seriously affect the election calendar, the commission has already declined to do so.

In the first phase of voter registration that ended on July 15, a total of 12.3 million citizens registered themselves. It is estimated that some 3 million Nepalis are expatriates, while 1 million eligible voters who are in Nepal did not register themselves in the first phase.

Crowds have been seen thronging electoral offices of Kathmandu and other districts all through the week after EC extended the window period for voter registration.

Those registering as voters get an electronic bio-metric ID card system with photo and digital records so as to minimize election frauds and the number of fake voters.

Prospective voters can register their names either in their home district or any other district that is convenient to them. But, one has to cast his or her vote in one's own electoral constituency.
