party committee and 33-party Front on holding round-table conference dissolves

The prior agreement between the high level political committee and the 33-party front led by the CPN-Maoist on holding a round-table conference has dissolved. The talks held today at New Baneshwor was a failure after the HLPC rejected the proposal of the 33-party Front to postpone the poll date and hold a round-table conference.

Following the meeting, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said the Front's proposal was rejected because it had come as an obstruction to the polls which was against the people's feelings.

CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung blamed the four major parties for the failure to reach agreement.

Congress President Sushil Koirala urged the CPN-Maoist to reconsider its demand. Both sides, emerging from the meeting, blamed each other for dissolving the discussions.

The 33-party Front, during the meeting, had put forth demands including the dissolution of the four-party mechanism, holding of a rightful conference including the agitating parties, and assigning the role of observers to the parties of the erstwhile Constituent Assembly and representatives of various groups and ethnic communities.

The Maoist demand is to hold discussions on the date for election, formation of a new government, internal issues of the new constitution and remaining aspects of the peace process during the round-table conference.

The proposal of the 33-party front states the decision from the round-table conference should be taken on the basis of consensus rather than majority.
