The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the high-level political committee's call for extension of the window period for voter registration by one more week.
Following the HLPC meeting, a team of four-party leaders met Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety Tuesday evening and urged him to extend the deadline. However, Uprety turned down the proposal, saying that further extension of the deadline will directly affect the November 19 elections, EC sources said.
Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, UCPN (Maoist) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) general secretary Jitendra Dev, Rastriya Madhes Samajbadi Party chairman Sharat Singh Bhandari and MJF-Nepal vice chairman Bharat Bimal had gone to meet Uprety following the HLPC decision to ask the EC to extend the window period for one more week.
The EC is currently carrying out the registration process, extending the window period for a week from August 17.
